Other general research taking place around the UK

Chemotherapy
There are four cancer centres in the UK where patients are offered chemotherapy of various types and biological treatments to see if they benefit from them. These are small trials at the moment but are being tested to see if they are worth studying in a larger, national scale.

Surgery
There is intense interest to identify the occasional patient in the early stage of the disease and to see if they can be helped by surgery. There will be a national register of these patients shortly but no trial has yet been proposed.

Radiotherapy
There has been a trial planned to see how many doses of radiotherapy are needed to prevent mesothelioma occurring in the chest wall after needle biopsies.

Biological Treatments
Biological treatments being considered at the moment may modify the body's immune response to a cancer and by altering this immune response some benefit may be obtained. Preliminary studies such as those at Leicester University and The Royal Marsden, London have been encouraging and may be introduced into larger clinical trials soon.
