Action Mesothelioma Day - Tuesday 27 February 2007

Events are taking place up and down the country on the UK's second UK Action Mesothelioma Day later this month, in towns and cities including Chesterfield, Doncaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Rotherham, Gateshead, Leicester, Rotherham and London. A new video will be shown on giants screens across the country.

Derbyshire Asbestos Support group (DUST)

Chesterfield

10.45 - 12 noon - Public Meeting at the Winding Wheel, Holywell Street, Chesterfield,

S41 7SA - speakers include Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team, AMICUS (the Union), Relative (son) of a man who recently lost his battle against the disease.

12.30 pm - Balloon Release at Rykneld Square, Chesterfield (in front of the TouristInformation Office)

1pm - Tea and coffee in the Winding Wheel

12 noon - Speeches at Leicester Town Hall Square - Speaker: Leicester Lord Mayor Reverend M Sharpe "A Time of Reflection"

12.30 pm - release of black balloons at the Town Hall Square, Leicester.

Great Manchester Asbestos Victims Support Group

12.30pm - Release of sponsored balloons in aid of mesothelioma research in Albert Square, Manchester Town Hall.

1.00pm - Public meeting and tea and coffee at The Friends Meeting House, Mount Street (near Albert Square) calling for Government funded mesothelioma research and employer action on protection from asbestos. Speakers: Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham MP, Minister and Rory O'Neil, editor Hazards Magazine.

Sheffield and Rotherham Asbestos Group (SARAG)

Rotherham

11am - A sponsored balloon release will take place at All Saints Square, Rotherham. The money raised through sponsorship of the balloons will go to mesothelioma research - Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund and June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund.

Doncaster

In Doncaster there will be a SARAG display in the Central Library from 26 February - 10 March highlighting Action Mesothelioma Day, the continuing hazards of asbestos and the local incidence of asbestos related disease.

The Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support Group and the Cheshire Asbestos Victims Support Group

12-2pm - meeting at Liverpool Town Hall, Liverpool.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool has agreed to attend together with the Mayor of Wirral and Dr Chris Warburton, consultant chest physician will be in attendance to answer medical questions and other health care professional on hand for one to one discussions with victims.

2pm - sponsored balloon release at the rear of the Town Hall, in exchange flags. Proceeds will be going to the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund.


Leeds Ridings Asbestos Support and Awareness Group (RASAG)

12-12.30pm - Balloon release at Dortmund Square, Leeds.


London

The Frontline Club is holding an event to celebrate some of the best examples of journalistic investigations into the asbestos industry . John Willis - the man behind the documentary: Alice - A Fight for Life, which made a real difference for all those working and living with asbestos: it caused the shares in the asbestos industry fall by £60 million and made the government reduce the levels of asbestos permissible in factories.
