Charity Gala 2004

Friday 27 February 7pm
Corpus Christi Church, Ellenborough Park Road South, Weston-Super-Mare

Letter from Marie Williams about the gala:

On the 17th of February 2003, my dear mother died from Mesothelioma. She had never worked with asbestos. She had lived in London during and after the Second World War. Her home was bombed. She lived there in London while it rebuilt itself: Old broken buildings demolished to make way for new, Plenty of dust to inhale in the air.

There was another incident. Asbestos was disturbed in a DIY project at a house we lived in in Tiverton, although Mum always said that the nearest she got to any asbestos was the piece in her ironing board!

We sent off for information about Mesothelioma and received useful support from Mavis. Mum spent nearly a fortnight in our Hospice and to be honest the care that she received and in fact the offers of support during and after her time left, was second to none.

I felt and still do angry (and allsorts of other emotions besides) that my mum got this wicked and terrible thing through the fault of manufacturers and Government inaction. Time and time again large corporations reduce the worth of human life in the chase for profits.

Anyway I thought I needed to something positive we had so much negative stuff - We lost my father-in -law and my brother-in law and two friends within six months.

I've never organised anything like this before. but I've been amazed at the generosity of people when asked to do something to help in this project. There are about one hundred people involved in performing, school choir, the towns Operatic Society, a Gospel Choir, a drama workshop and Folk, Flute and Clarinet bands. We are having an interval, with a tombola and a raffle. We will be displaying leaflets about Mesothelioma and the Hospice. We are hoping that some other organisations will bring some leaflets too - a Carers organisation, etc There are so many organisations all involved in supporting and caring for people in different ways.
