St Stephen’s Church, Moortown, Leeds provided the backdrop to a fundraising concert by Mixed Voices on Saturday 12 September. The evening was organised by members of the MARC (Mesothelioma and Asbestos Related Concerns) Group led by Avril Jackson and Val Cranley, and raised £1127.

The event was extremely well supported; in addition to tickets sold in advance, many concertgoers bought tickets at the door and extra seating had to be borrowed from neighbouring St Barnabas’s Church, so the church was filled to capacity.

The evening opened with a short talk about mesothelioma and the work of the Fund by Dr Mat Callister, Consultant Chest Physician at St James’s Hospital, Leeds. Compere Christine Castle took charge of the proceedings and the audience was entertained by a lively and packed programme of songs from shows like West Side Story, Evita and Mamma Mia, delivered with tremendous energy and enthusiasm by the choir, conducted by musical director, Tracey Williams.

The show was punctuated by some beautiful solo pieces including a rendition of ‘Evergreen’ by Ruth Kingdom. Dave Burwell and Simeon Solts provided piano accompaniments and treated the audience to musical performances that were worthy of concert status in their own
